Series: Why Choose Jesus?
Choices – it is estimated that the average person makes about 35,000 choices a day.
One of the unique features of modern life in America is how acclimated we’ve become to the luxury of choosing what we want. We choose which songs to play on Spotify, which show to watch on Amazon Prime or Netflix, which restaurant to go to for lunch, or which picture to post on social media. It’s a far cry from three channels on TV, four stations on the radio, and the same peanut butter and jelly in the pantry every day. Many of us have grown accustomed to a reality that is highly curated to suit our tastes and sensibilities. Because of this it’s jarring when we face a serious situation where there appears to be no choice: we lose our job. Our loved ones become ill. A friend experiences tragedy. Our spouse leaves us. Our city falls into disrepair. Even though we don’t choose those things, they remain a real part of our lives.
Our spiritual life is also filled with choice. Most of us, if we’re being honest, just want to be left alone to live the life we want to live. We don’t want to be proselytized, evangelized, or persuaded in any direction other than the way we want our life to go. But what if reality isn’t set up that way? What if the health and the viability of spiritual lives hinged on making an important choice that we could not avoid? What if the truth about our spiritual condition needs to be addressed right now, the same way that we are forced to address the other serious matters of life? What if we had to confront the call of Jesus?
Some reject the message of the good news of Jesus Christ, because they see it as a false choice. “Why do I have to choose? Can’t I just believe what I want?” That is certainly one approach. But it’s not the only way. And if we seriously consider the claims that Jesus made about Himself, the world, and humanity, we would find that the call of Jesus is much more pressing than the usual choices that consume our daily lives.
What if Jesus is calling you, and you realize you need to make a choice? Why should you choose Him? Fortunately, the Bible offers a narrative perspective that illuminates real reasons for why choosing Jesus is the path to spiritual peace and wholeness. Abundant life in this life, and eternal life in the life to come. If you are willing to be open to this possibility, the way you view your own choices will never be the same.
Why Choose Jesus? Let’s investigate together.
